Cockroach Exterminator in Clarksville

Small roaches in the kitchen are almost always German cockroaches, and they need targeted gel bait, usually over a few weeks. Big dark roaches near the porch light are outdoor species that wander in, and the fix there is mostly outside the house.

The first step is knowing which roach you have, because the indoor and outdoor species need different treatment. Get that wrong and you can spray for months without fixing anything. If you are not sure, send a photo before anyone sprays.

Which roach is it?

German cockroach: the apartment roach

Adults are light brown and about 1/2 inch long, with two dark stripes running lengthwise on the shield behind the head. The University of Kentucky cockroach factsheet calls it by far the most common roach in homes and buildings, and notes that it does not live outdoors. It stays where people are, mostly under sinks and behind the fridge and stove. It also hides in warm electronics like toaster ovens.

German roaches usually arrive in grocery bags or used furniture. In apartments they also move between units through shared walls and plumbing gaps. UK says a single mated female can produce thousands of offspring in less than a year, so this is the one roach you should not wait on. If you see them in daylight, the population is usually large.

American and smokybrown cockroaches: the "palmetto bugs"

These are the big ones. The American cockroach is about 1 1/2 inches long, reddish brown, with a pale yellow band behind the head. It favors damp basements and floor drains, and goes outdoors in warm months. The smokybrown is shiny dark brown all over and runs 1 to 1 1/2 inches.

A 2022 UT Entomology and Plant Pathology newsletter by urban entomologist Karen Vail reports that smokybrowns, once left off Tennessee's distribution maps, now turn up in locations across the state. She notes that pest professionals around Chattanooga reported more of them. Smokybrowns dry out easily, so they live outdoors in damp mulch and tree holes. Clogged gutters and wood piles suit them too. They come to lights at night. University of Georgia Extension notes that "palmetto bug" is a catch-all name people use for the smokybrown and a few of its larger cousins.

Wood cockroaches

Wood roaches are brownish and about 1 inch long, and they live under loose bark and in woodpiles. UK says they cannot survive indoors, but they wander in during spring and summer, and males fly to lights. They also come in on firewood in winter. If you live near woods in Clarksville, St. Bethlehem or Woodlawn and see a lone roach in May or June, this is the likely one. It does not mean you have an infestation.

Baits vs sprays

For German roaches, gel bait is the tool I would want used. UK says most people get better results with baits than with sprays, and that used correctly, baits can match professional results. The insecticide is slow, so a roach eats it and goes back to its hiding place to die, and others that contact its droppings can die too.

What good baiting looks like, per UK:

  • Many small, pea-sized dabs in cracks and along cabinet edges. More than a dozen may be needed just under a kitchen sink.
  • Bait wherever you see droppings, which look like pepper specks.
  • No cleaner or spray around the bait, since that keeps roaches from eating it.

Sprays have a place, but they belong in hiding spots, not along open baseboards and counters. UK says roaches spend little time in the open, so spraying exposed surfaces mostly misses them. Many sprays also repel roaches, and that can push them into wall voids or the next apartment.

Skip the bug bomb. UK's factsheet says foggers seldom work against household pests because almost none of the spray reaches cracks and voids. The ingredients repel roaches and drive them deeper into walls. UK also notes injuries and house fires from foggers set off near pilot lights.

For smokybrown and wood roaches, the work is outside. The UT newsletter describes the approach that worked in research: clear leaf litter and ground cover within a foot of the house, trim limbs back, seal entry points, then treat the perimeter and use granular and gel baits where roaches hide.

How long it takes

UK says a roach that eats bait usually dies within one to three days, and a big drop in the population should show within a few weeks. A heavy apartment infestation can take longer and need bait replaced as roaches eat it.

Clarksville averages 251 days a year warm enough for insects to be active, from our Clarksville pest data. That matters more for the outdoor species, which follow the weather. German roaches breed indoors all year regardless.

Watch for year-long contracts. UK points out that some companies require a full year of general service to treat roaches, and says it should not take a full year to eliminate them from a single-family home if treatment is done correctly. Many professional products stay effective for months, so monthly reapplication after the roaches are gone is seldom needed. I would ask for a short treatment plan with follow-ups and an option to stop once they are gone. Our one-time vs quarterly guide covers when ongoing service makes sense.

A written price before treatment is the easiest way to keep the plan honest.

Apartments: whose job is it?

German roaches in a multi-unit building rarely stay in one unit. UK recommends sealing gaps around pipes and wires to slow movement between apartments, which is work your landlord controls. In Montgomery County, the Tennessee landlord and tenant act requires the landlord to keep the premises fit and habitable, and the tenant to keep their unit as clean and safe as when they moved in. Report roaches in writing and keep a copy. Our renters guide covers notice and what to do if nothing happens.

Roaches are a health issue, not only a nuisance. UK says their droppings and shed skins are allergens that can trigger asthma, especially in children in crowded housing.

When the leasing office says the exterminator is coming next week, and next week keeps moving, put it in writing: the date you first reported roaches, what you saw and where. A dated written record is what the Tennessee notice rules turn on, and it is what you will need if the problem drags on. Our renters guide covers the notice steps.

What cockroach treatment costs

This Old House (updated March 16, 2026) publishes these national ranges:

JobPublished national range
Single professional treatment$100 to $600 (average $200)
Small infestation$100 to $400
Major infestation$300 to $700
Severe infestation$2,500 to $7,000

These are national figures, not our quotes. See our Clarksville cost guide for other pests.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between a German cockroach and a palmetto bug?

German cockroaches are about 1/2 inch, light brown with two dark stripes behind the head, and live only indoors. Palmetto bug is a common name for large outdoor roaches like the smokybrown and American cockroach, which are 1 to 1 1/2 inches long.

Do roach bombs work?

Rarely. University of Kentucky entomologists say foggers barely reach the cracks where roaches hide and tend to drive them deeper into walls. Gel baits placed in hiding spots work better.

How long does it take to get rid of German roaches?

With good baiting, roaches die within one to three days of feeding and a large drop should be visible within a few weeks, according to the University of Kentucky. Heavy infestations take longer.

Does one big roach mean I have an infestation?

Usually not. Wood roaches and smokybrowns live outdoors and wander in, especially in warm months and toward lights. Small roaches indoors, especially in daylight, are the warning sign.

Do I need a year-long contract to get rid of roaches?

The University of Kentucky says it should not take a full year to eliminate roaches from a single-family home if treatment is done correctly. Ask for a short plan with follow-ups.
